The 3 People I Write For

Like many who find their way to Medium, I was not sure what my writing niche was going to be when I started. For as long as I had been dreaming about starting my writing career, you would think that I knew which topics I wanted to cover and who my audience was. In reality, theory has turned out to be totally different from execution. Looking through my blogs, I discovered that there are 3 people I write for — myself (as narcissistic as that sounds), fellow writers and entrepreneurs, and skimmers.

  1. Little Ol’ Me. Medium has provided a great space for writers to start their writing journeys. My blog serves as documentation of my journey. I am excited to look back a year from now to see how much my style and point of view have changed. I know at this point I am lacking in skills and consistency, but that is ok. With as much as I write on Medium, I read even more. I have access to content that will help guide me forward. It’s comforting to read articles from those who have been in the same place as me. These writers are the next group of people I write for.
  2. Writers and Entrepreneurs. I have gained so much knowledge from the writing and entrepreneurial communities. I hope that I am able to contribute to the conversation and equally enrich these communities. I come from an academic background and I will be working to use my research skills to produce beneficial content. But I will have to work to shift away from the academic mindset. There is no right or wrong in the learning process. You can read the books, the articles, and even do research on the legalities of setting up LLCs or corporations. But the most valuable knowledge will come from actually “doing the thing.” Writing about my experiences and what works and doesn’t work is something that I am hoping will benefit other writers and entrepreneurs.
  3. The Skimmers. While writing for myself and other writers are my main goals, I am hoping that I can impart knowledge to an unsuspecting soul. I have read many stories about meditation, yoga, politics, even songwriting. These articles always leave me amazed at how much I don’t know. The articles I have read specific to journaling and breathing exercises have been very helpful. When people surf the internet or skim through titles on Medium, they are not always looking for something specific. Sometimes a random article title will catch their attention and lure them into reading. I would like to write useful content for the Skimmers out there who didn’t know that they were looking for the knowledge in my article.

Who is my ideal audience? Anyone with an open mind who is wanting to learn. I am always looking to learn. Writers and entrepreneurs are perpetual learners. Skimmers are unsuspecting learners. Though my content is a little all over the place right now, I hope someone somewhere is finding it useful to them.
